The AESO recently ran a competition mandated by the Alberta government to select a company to build, finance, own and operate a new transmission line between the Wabamun area west of Edmonton and the Fort McMurray area.
Throughout 2014, five companies participated in the process. In December 2014, Alberta PowerLine Limited Partnership—a partnership between Alberta-based Canadian Utilities Limited (an ATCO company) and U.S.-based Quanta Capital Solutions, Inc.—was awarded the contract for the Fort McMurray West 500-kilovolt Transmission Project.
Before construction can begin, the project will require full regulatory approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission.

Based on the current economic environment and sustained low oil prices, the AESO is deferring the launch date of the Fort McMurray East 500 kV Transmission Project. The AESO will release its next forecast in early 2016 and at that time we will be in a better position to provide an update on the project.
