Who we are
We’re the AESO, the Alberta Electric System Operator. Our job is to plan and operate the provincial transmission system so that all Albertans can count on safe, reliable electricity to power our homes, businesses, industry and farms – now and in the future.
We’re an independent, not-for-profit organization. We don’t own or have a financial interest in any power facilities and we act in the public interest of all Albertans. We’re governed by an independent board with representatives drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions.
A strong transmission system for a strong province
Albertans need a strong transmission grid to power our homes, our businesses and our industries. Moving power reliably and efficiently from the plants that produce it, to the businesses and homes that use it, is the key to Alberta’s economic well being and our excellent quality of life.
Currently our transmission system is stretched to the limit and has not had a major upgrade in over 20 years. We’re addressing this challenge through our draft Long-term Transmission Plan that was published in June 2011. The plan includes a detailed analysis of what’s required so Alberta’s transmission system stays strong, reliable and efficient as the province continues to grow.
We’re listening to Albertans
Listening to you is a big part of what we do. Throughout our organization, consultation is important to how we do our work. We gather input from Albertans through our information sessions as well as discussions with industry and all levels of government. We seek input from stakeholders by holding open houses, mailing information packages, placing newspaper ads and making information available on this website.
